Purpose

The Golf Ontario Player of the Year (POTY) Rankings are designed to showcase and recognize top performances by Ontario amateur players in their respective categories each year.  

These rankings help determine:  

Player of the Year Awards

 Awarded to the player with the most points in each category during the designated ranking period.

Golf Ontario Championship Exemptions

 Rankings help determine automatic exemptions into the following year’s Golf Ontario championships. Refer to individual championship exemption criteria for full details.  

GO-Selected Amateur Teams

Rankings are also used to determine players for GO selected teams for events (non-junior), such as:  

• Ada Mackenzie Matches  

Ontario-Michigan Matches  
(See Golf Ontario-Selected Teams section for event-specific selection criteria.)  

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Player of the Year Rankings, a player must:  

• Compete in at least one Golf Ontario event during the ranking period.  

• Be an active Golf Ontario or Golf Canada member, either through:  

• A member golf club, or  

• The Public Player Program, with a current official Golf Canada Handicap Index.  

• Be a primary resident of Ontario  

• Exception: OVGA member clubs and members may also qualify  

Ranking Categories

Categories
Men’s Amateur	Open to all ages
Men’s Mid-Amateur	Open to all ages
Senior Men’s Amateur	Age 25+ as of first round of the Canadian Men’s Mid-Am
Women’s Amateur	Age 25+ as of first round of the Canadian Women’s Mid-Am
Women’s Mid-Amateur	Age 55+ as of first round of the Canadian Men’s Senior
Senior Women’s Amateur	Age 50+ as of first round of the Canadian Women’s Senior

Point Earning Period & Updates 

• Ranking Period: November 1, 2024 – October 31, 2025  

• Rankings are updated after the completion of Golf Ontario and designated external events. 
  

Tie Scenarios 

• Ties for Player of the Year will result in Co-Champions.  

• Ties affecting Golf Ontario Amateur Team Selections will follow the posted tie-breaker criteria for each event.   

Counting Events

General Event Criteria  

• A maximum of eight (8) ranked events counts toward a player’s ranking.  

• A maximum of four (4) international events may be included.  

Note:  

• NCAA collegiate events are not eligible for rankings.  

• International events that are “closed” (require specific affiliation/membership) are not eligible.

Annual Rankings Review

Each season, Golf Ontario will conduct a full review of the Player of the Year Rankings structure, including:  

• Eligibility criteria  

• Point earning periods  

• Counting events  

• Point distribution charts  

All updates will be published prior to the start of the next season.
