The Ontario Men’s Four-Ball Championship returns to Oakdale Golf & Country Club in North York on Monday, October 5 with a 10am shotgun start where 112 players forming 56 teams will compete for one of the province’s most prestigious amateur titles in an 18-hole four-ball competition.
Over the years, the championship has featured Hall of Fame champions including Mike Weir, Gary Cowan, Warren Sye, Kelly Roberts, Bill Morland and Phil Farley.
Celebrating a Centennial Season
As Oakdale celebrates its 100th anniversary, hosting the Ontario Men’s Four-Ball Championship adds another chapter to the club’s long history of championship golf.
“Oakdale is extremely proud to host the 67th Ontario Men’s Four-Ball Championship, particularly during such a special year for the Club as we celebrate our Centennial,” said Alex Arychu, Director of Golf at Oakdale Golf & Country Club. “Championship golf has always been an important part of Oakdale’s history, and welcoming some of the top amateur players is a great opportunity to showcase the Club, our golf course and the work of our entire team.”
The Course
This year’s event marks the first time since 2016 that competitors will play the Knudson-Homenuik rotation, one of three nine-hole layouts at the club. The Knudson nine formed the closing stretch of the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, including the memorable 18th hole where Nick Taylor made a 72-foot eagle putt to win the championship.
With elevation changes, strategic approach shots and challenging green complexes, teams will need to balance aggression with smart decision-making throughout the round.
“Oakdale rewards good course management and consistent ball striking,” said Arychu. “Players will need to be smart with their decisions and put themselves in the right positions throughout the round.
“Players will need to think carefully about where they leave the ball, particularly around the greens, because being on the wrong side of the hole can make scoring difficult very quickly. In a Four-Ball format, there will certainly be opportunities to be aggressive, but the teams that understand when to take those chances and when to play conservatively should be rewarded.”
