Samuel Captures Women’s Mid-Am, Final Round of Women’s Am Goes Tomorrow
Amherstburg, ON – While it was moving day at Pointe West Golf Club for round three of the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship, the final round of the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship portion concluded with Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC) capturing the 2021 crown.
Firing a 75 to leave her two strokes ahead of the silver medalist, Samuel secures her fourth Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Having won the title in 1991, 2000, and 2010, Samuel also holds the 1991 and 2004 Women’s Amateur and 2011 and 2020 Senior Women’s Championship titles. In second place with the silver medal after her lowest round of the championship, is 2021 Ontario Senior Women’s Champion, Judith Kyrinis (The Thornhill Club). Defending champion, Nonie Marler (Marine Drive GC), tried to make a run for the title today as well with a low round of 74 to leave her in the bronze medalist position.
In the post-round interview, Samuel expressed that “anytime you can win your provincial championship it feels good. It’s amazing, it just feels like such an accomplishment so I was very happy to do so.” Approaching the eighteenth green, Samuel felt pretty calm. “I was leaking oil the whole back nine, so I was just trying to hang on. I remember Tiger Woods once saying it doesn’t matter, you’re in the lead, so I was focusing on that. I had the lead so I didn’t worry about it. I kept trying to self-talk that way.” In closing, Samuel noted how “unbelievable this course is. It’s so nice that we got to play on such a great course. There’s not a hole out there that’s bad and that’s unusual. Every hole is absolutely amazing and the course is in great shape. Anytime that you can have great greens, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the course is like. But Pointe West Golf Club has both. It has great greens and it’s also superb strategy wise.”
With the final round taking place for the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship tomorrow, Jasmine Ly (Public Player) leads the pack with a three-stroke lead at five-under. Ella Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC) of Team Ontario sits at two-under, with the 2021 Canadian Junior Girls Champion, Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), and USGA Junior Girls qualifier medalist, Ashley Lafontaine (Royal Ottawa GC), trailing just one stroke back in a tie for third.
The final round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, with the eighteenth green being live-streamed on Instagram for all to witness the final putt of the next 2021 Ontario Women’s Amateur Champion. Round 2 Recaps, Mid-Am Champ Crowned After Round 3 Tomorrow From Pointe West GC
Amherstburg, ON – Round two is in the books at Pointe West Golf Club for the 106th Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship. A cut in the Amateur field has been made to the low 48 scores and a champion will be crowned for the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship following the third-round tomorrow.
Moving into the Mid-Amateur leader position following a round of 75 is Weston Golf and Country Club’s Terrill Samuel. Falling to second after a grind of a round is Alexandra Taylor (Cherry Hill Club), with Stefi Markovich (Lookout Point CC) and Judith Kyrinis (The Thornhill Club) just one-stroke back in a tie for third. Tee times for the field are set for 10:04 a.m., with the leader group teeing off at 10:37 a.m.
Over in the larger Amateur field, Nyah Kelly (Lindsay G&CC) finds herself in first with a two-stroke lead following a low round of 69. A tie for second remains, with Jasmine Ly (Public Player) and Ella Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC) in the race as moving day gets underway at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Light Showers Greet Round 1 of Womens Am & Mid-Am at Pointe West GC
Amherstburg, ON – With light showers throughout the day, round one of the 106th Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship got underway at Pointe West Golf Club. The beautiful links style course is in fantastic condition, with all players complimenting the course and its lush rolling greens.
Taking the early lead in the Women’s Amateur field is Bo Brown (Blue Springs GC) with a smooth three-under, 69 round. The Team Ontario athlete holds a one-stroke lead over players Nyah Kelly (Lindsay G&CC) and teammate Ella Weber (Rattlesnake GC), who are both tied for second. The Women’s Mid-Amateur field is led by Golf Ontario’s own Alexandra Taylor (Cherry Hill Club), who fired some clutch shots today to leave her with a score of 73 and a fifth-place position in the Amateur field. A tie for second also exists for the Mid-Am, with Stefi Markovich (Lookout Point CC) and Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC) just three-strokes back (76).
For the stacked field of competitors, round two (of four) will be crucial as players look to make a move on the leaderboard. A cut to the low 48 plus ties in the Amateur field will be taking place following tomorrow’s round, which gets underway at 7:30 a.m.. The 2021 Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion will be crowned following round three on Wednesday.

Pointe West GC Welcomes 106th Ontario Women’s Am & Mid-Am Championship
Uxbridge, ON – As we continue our exciting stretch of championship coverage, Golf Ontario will be heading to Amherstburg from August 16th to 19th, as Pointe West Golf Club prepares to host the 2021 Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship.
The links style course at Pointe West was established and designed by Canadian and world-renowned Golf Course Architect, Thomas McBroom, in 1989. Director of Golf, Rick Schmidtgall, says that “the course is in fantastic shape. We have a lot of great competitors coming down and we’re looking forward to them playing the McBroom designed course.” When asked to describe challenges competitors may experience, Schmidtgall explained he “strongly believes that the tournament can be determined on holes two to seven, as they’re all tough holes that could make or break someone’s game.” Pointe West is proud to be hosting and is looking forward to welcoming some great Women golfers to challenge their course.
The 106th Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship will welcome a field of 86 competitors. The first two rounds of stroke play will host the full field, with cuts being made after 36 holes with the low 48 scores and ties moving forward to compete in rounds three and four. A Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion will be awarded after 54 holes, for a competitor with the lowest score aged 25 and older. The Women’s Amateur Champion will be awarded following the full 72 holes of competitive play.
Competitors in the field to watch for include both defending champions of the 2020 Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship, Sydney Naro (Public Player) and Nonie Marler (Marine Drive GC). This stacked field will also see the following 2021 champions in attendance; 66th Canadian Junior Girls Champion, Nicole Gal (Oakville GC) of Team Canada’s National Junior Squad, 107th Canadian Women’s Amateur Champion, Lauren Zareskty (Ladies GC of Toronto), Ontario Women’s Match Play and Alberta Amateur Champion, Hailey Katona (Tilbury GC), Ontario Junior Girls Champion, Peyton Costabile (Whistle Bear GC), and Ontario Senior Women’s Champion, Judith Kyrinis (The Thornhill Club).

Giroux Captures 2021 Ontario Men’s Am, Presented by TD Brazier / Dupuis Wealth Management
Tecumseh, ON – Following an eventful 54-holes of golf over the course of four days, the crown has been passed down and the 99th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship has been awarded to Thomas Giroux. The championship hosted by Beach Grove Golf and Country Club experienced water accumulation during round two, causing the tournament to be shortened to a 54-hole championship. This decision was made following consultation with the course superintendent and the tournament committee.
After a tie in regular play in pursuit of the title, Nicholas Hofland (Hamilton G&CC) and Thomas Giroux (The Club at North Halton) endured a sudden-death playoff on eighteen. Both eight-under following the final round, Hofland and Giroux would head back to the tips with Giroux coming out as the victor. Giroux’s name will join the likes of Gary Cowan, Stu Hamilton, Mike Weir, Warren Sye, Albin Choi, and Corey Conners on the 1923 Gary Cowan trophy. Hofland would claim the silver medal after a low round of 66 and a total score of 205. The bronze medalist, Cam Kellett (St. Thomas G&CC), would fire a total six-under on the championship to leave him three strokes off Giroux.
In the post-round interview, Giroux said the win “feels really good. It’s my first Ontario Amateur win, so it’s kind of a notch on the belt and I’m really excited about it.” Heading to a playoff with Hofland, Giroux expressed that “neither of us hit stellar drives but mine got a little lucky with a bounce to keep it in play. Second shot was decent, into the right bunker, then I made a nice up and down for birdie to seal the deal.” With rounds of 70, 67, and 68, Giroux felt that he really picked apart the course with his driver. “I’d say it’s probably the best I’ve ever hit my driver in a tournament. I kind of overpowered it a little bit to give myself a lot of opportunities around the front nine, and then made a lot of clutch up and downs coming down ten, eleven, twelve, and thirteen. I wasn’t hitting many greens and I had some good ups and downs for a lot of chances, so that was good.”
A member of the Oakland University men’s golf team, Giroux commented that his recent season assisted his win today. “We had a shortened season obviously due to COVID, but we played well and finished strong by winning our conference. That lead us to regionals and we did our best. It’s always good to play against the best fields out there, so it definitely helped me get into this week.” In closing, Giroux thanked Golf Ontario and Beach Grove.

Round 3 of the Ontario Men’s Am Championship is Moved to Friday after Weather Delays
Tecumseh, ON – Due to dangerous weather and water accumulation after a night of heavy rainfall, round three of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship presented by TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management, has been suspended and moved to Friday. Instead, round two at Beach Grove G&CC resumed play at noon with the final two groups of the round taking to the course.
Following the completion of round two, cuts have been made to the low 48 plus ties. Taking the lead today after a birdie on eighteen is Oakland University Athletics golfer, Thomas Giroux (The Club at North Halton). Holding second after firing a round of 67 as well, is Taylor Beckstead of Tangle Creek G&CC, with Connor Rochon (Weston G&CC) and Nicholas Hofland (Hamilton G&CC) trailing one-stroke back in third. The group of Curtis Hughes (Beach Grove G&CC), David Lang (Donalda Club), Simon McInnis (Rebel Creek GC), Cam Kellett (St. Thomas G&CC), and Charles Fitzsimmons (St. Thomas G&CC) all share T5 heading into the final day of competition tomorrow.
After consultation with the course superintendent and the unfavourable weather forecast tomorrow, the tournament committee has made the decision to shorten the championship to 54 holes. Final round tee times have been emailed to players and are now posted on the tournament website. Action will get underway at 7:30 a.m.. tomorrow.

Weather delays Round 2 of Men’s Am Presented by TD Brazier / Dupuis Wealth Management
Tecumseh, ON – Round two of the 99th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship, presented by TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management, was welcomed by mild sunny conditions this morning. Heading into the afternoon, scenes from the Beach Grove Golf and Country Club looked quite the opposite, with a two-hour and forty-five-minute weather delay taking place. The torrential downpour mixed with high winds and a thunderstorm left the course wet, as players returned to their positions at 6:30 p.m. to finish what they could of the round before dark.
The two final groups of the round were delayed due to darkness, meaning they will resume their second round at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. Currently holding the lead with a low round of 67 is Taylor Beckstead (Tanglecreek), in a tie for first place with Thomas Giroux (The Club at North Halton) who has yet to finish his round. One-stroke back and maintaining his position throughout the day is Connor Rochon (Weston G&CC) at three-under. David Lang (Donalda Club), Simon McInnis (Rebel Creek GC), Curtis Hughes (Beach Grove G&CC), and Nicholas Hofland (Hamilton G&CC) trail in fourth with a total of 140.
Following the remaining holes to be played for the second round, cuts will be made to the low 48 plus ties. Updates will be posted to the championship website and emailed to all players, with round three beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m.. Tight Leaderboard after Round 1 of Men’s Am, Presented by TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management
Tecumseh, ON – Under hot and humid conditions, round one of the 99th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship presented by TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management, got underway at the 100-year-old Beach Grove Golf and Country Club. The field of 114 players came out sharp, as they looked to make early moves on the leaderboard.
Leading the pack after the first round in a two-way tie is Nicholas Hofland (Hamilton G&CC) and Charles Fitzsimmons (St. Thomas G&CC). Both shooting three-under, Hofland sunk an eagle on eighteen while Fitzsimmons fired six birdies. Trailing just one stroke back is a pack of players tied in third, all completing a round of 69. The group of six in T3 contains Eric Yun (Station Creek GC), Jaret Chipman (Cherry Hill Club), Simon McInnis (Rebel Creek GC), Cam Kellet (St. Thomas G&CC), Connor Rochon (Weston G&CC), and Bavake Sihota (TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley).

Beach Grove Centennial Anniversary Welcomes 99th Ontario Men’s Am
Uxbridge, ON – Celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2021, Beach Grove Golf and Country Club will host arguably the most prestigious event in the country from August 10th to 13th. Welcoming a field of 114 players, the 99th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship presented by TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management will take to the course in Windsor as the best male amateur players battle for the crown.
To honour their 100th anniversary, Beach Grove has had a strong calendar of events scheduled for its members all year, with the Men’s Amateur adding to the celebrations. General Manager, Aidan Blunt, commented that “it’ll be a good test for everybody. Obviously, with it being one-hundred years old, it’s not as long as some of the modern golf courses. Having said that, the greens are not easy to read and they are small, so if you miss it, an up and down is going to be a challenge.” The course is in great condition, as Blunt added that “we’re growing the rough on the fairways and around the greens. The greens will be fast, as they’ll be double cut and rolled each day. It’s a Stanley Thompson design, with tree-lined tight fairways, and small greens. It’s just the collective nature of the course that will present a challenge. It will suit the type of golfer that can think their way around the course and play strategically.” As the championship is presented by title sponsor TD Brazier/Dupuis Wealth Management, Beach Grove has also brought on several supporting sponsors. The 2021 Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship will see athletes from the following qualifiers in attendance: Tangle Creek G&CC, Baxter Creek GC, King’s Forest GC, Shelburne G&CC, Lively GC, Upper Canada GC, Grand Niagara GC, and Ambassador GC. For leaderboard information on qualifiers, click the golf course name. The first two rounds of stroke play will host the full field, with cuts being made after 36 holes with the low 48 scores and ties moving forward to compete in rounds three and four.
Returning to defend his title, the 2020 Ontario Men’s Amateur Champion and National Amateur Squad Member, Cougar Collins (Rocky Crest GC), will be in attendance competing against fellow Team Canada golf athlete Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui G&CC). McCulloch, a National Junior Squad Member, has had a shinning start to his 2021 season with a first-place finish at the Glencoe Invitational and the British Columbia Men’s Amateur Championship. Additional reigning Golf Ontario champions in attendance include Dave Bunker of Cherry Hill Club and Chares Fitzsimmons of St. Thomas G&CC.

Costabile Battles Hard to be Crowned the 2021 Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Champion
Brockville, ON – With temperatures reaching the mid-twenties at Brockville Country Club today, the players battled to be crowned the 2021 Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Champion. Following round three, the leaderboard was tight with just eleven girls sitting within a ten-stroke difference. In the final round, the leader groups pulled away from the pack to present a true champion.
Firing her lowest round and the only under-par score of the tournament, is the newly crowned Ontario Junior Girls’ Champion, Peyton Costabile (Whistle Bear). Costabile defeated the challenging Stanley Thompson design, to finish the championship with a one-under round and 296 total. Her name will join the likes of Marlene Stewart Streit, Sandra Post, Alena Sharp, and Brooke Henderson on the 1927 Ellis trophy. Claiming the silver medal three-strokes back is Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC), after a round of 76. The bronze medalist, Chaewon Baek (BC Public Player), would fire a total thirteen-over on the championship.
In the post win interview, Costabile expressed “it honestly feels so amazing! I have played this event for four years now and I’ve seen one of my closest friends win it. While I’ve always been near the top, I didn’t play so well last year. I came up this year and I really wanted to win, and I did, so I’m extremely happy.” Through rounds one and two, Costabile was focused on staying level headed and playing her best game to get her as far up on the leaderboard as possible. Round three brought complications of time delays and rushing through holes, which lead to missed putts. In the final round, Costabile says she “just went out there and tried to have the best time. Emily McKee, Nyah Kelly, and I made it a great day and had a bunch of fun.”
Reflecting on the tournament, Costabile’s strongest part of the four rounds was her putting. “I made a lot of putts and my mental game just really kept me in it. I could’ve lost myself a couple of times, but I just stayed level headed and positive.” Peyton Costabile will be competing next at the 2021 Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship at Pointe West Golf Club in Windsor. In closing, she wished to “thank all the Golf Ontario volunteers and staff for running a great tournament this week.”

About The Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship
First contested in 1927, the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship features Ontario’s best amateur female golfers age 18 and under. The event consists of 72 holes of stroke play competition. The championship has a rich history of young Ontarians who have gone on to have successful golf careers, such as World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Stewart Streit (1951, 1952). Other notable winners include, Sandra Post (1965, 1966), Sue Hilton (1962), Alena Sharp (1997, 1998), Jessica Shepley (2001), Jennifer Kirby (2008, 2009), and Brooke Henderson (2011, 2012).
