Gormley, ON – After a humid and breezy first round of the Public Player Championship presented by Baka, players enjoyed a mostly duller, wetter day of weather for final round play from the beautiful Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club. Temperatures in the high 20’s coupled with light rain in the morning and increased winds and occasional rain in the afternoon, made for a challenging yet fun day as players battled for Public Amateur supremacy.

With three championship flights up for grabs, golfers in the A flight (gross) and B and C flights (net) again took on the picturesque Meadowbrook course.

The overall winner and winner of the A flight (gross) competition was Aurora’s Kevin Holloway. Birdies on 11, 15 and and 18 secured him the victory with an even par round of 71 and +2 overall. His 2 day total was enough for a two shot victory over 2nd place finisher and day one leader Gavin Smith of Orangeville, who was one stroke ahead of 3rd place finisher Dan Kavanagh of Scarborough. Holloway, was understandably ecstatic with his win. “It’s actually really exciting, it’s the first tournament I’ve ever won”, said Holloway. He went on to talk about his round mentioning “it was pretty steady, considering conditions were very difficult with varying weather but playing with the other leaders kept me focused and I just took it one shot at a time”.

The B Flight and the first net score competition finished in regulation with a 2-way tie of +1 overall for the lead between Troy Darbyson and Ken Brace, both of Brooklin, requiring a 3 hole playoff.  Darbyson had the low round through both rounds shooting a 68 in round one to help build his early lead and hang on to reach the playoff holes, from which he would emerge victorious. Brace climbed the leaderboard today with a strong 69 final round to tie things up. Coming in 3rd place in this flight was Kyle Stolys of Richmond Hill, who finished three strokes back at +3 overall for the Championship.

The C flight Championship also ended in regulation with a 2-way tie for the lead between Zachary Peters and Andrew Garron. Peters and Garron both finished at +3 for the Championship, and went to a 3-hole playoff to determine the winner. After a closely contested playoff, Hamilton’s Peters emerged as the winner of the C flight.  2nd place went to Kingston’s Garron, followed by the 3rd place finisher Mark Rodrigues of Milton, who finished three shots back at +6.

For many competitors, this was their first experience competing in a Golf Ontario championship while others are seasoned veterans. The Baka Public Amateur Championship provides the perfect opportunity for those interested in trying a competitive tournament while providing gross and net flights. This allows higher handicap players to play against players in their handicap grouping. Anyone who has considered trying one of Golf Ontario’s events should look to the 2021 Public Amateur Championship presented by Baka as a great starting event.

TOTTENHAM — After a very successful launch in 2019, the Ontario Disability Golf Championship will return in 2020 at the beautiful Woodington Lake Golf Club. Run by Golf Ontario, the Ontario Disability Golf Championship is a marquee event in the championship calendar.

The 2020 Ontario Disability Championship will take place on September 28-29, 2020 and will showcase some of the world’s top athletes with a disability, competing in a provincial championship environment. Focusing on player development, this inclusive event will ensure a proper pathway and better competition opportunity for some of the highest performing disabled athletes. This event will be included in the list of events eligible for world ranking points and will see both men and women compete in both low gross and low net categories.

As part of this year’s event, Special Olympics Ontario is pleased to announce a partnership with Woodington Lake Golf Club to help support and promote the event. Special Olympics Ontario will provide volunteer and coach training, as well as assistance with the recruitment of athletes and volunteers to help stage this world class event.

Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario is thrilled with this new partnership. “The Ontario Disability Championship saw a successful start in 2019, and provides golfer athletes with another avenue to compete at a high level. We see this as a great opportunity for more of our Special Olympic athletes to participate, and create an even bigger and stronger event than last year. We look forward to helping Woodington Lake Golf Club and Golf Ontario put on an unbelievable event”.

The Ontario Disability Championship will feature 36 holes of championship stroke play across 4 open divisions. There will be a low gross and low net for both women and men. The Championship will be open to all ages and will require participants to have an Official Handicap Index Limit of 28 for men, and 36 for women.

Cambridge, ON – With clouds looming over Cambridge Golf Club this morning, many players were worried that the final round of the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship would be rained on. In a turn of events, the sun came out and the heat turned up, much like the moves made on the leaderboard.

In celebration of Women’s Golf Day, the Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ dominated the course, as the females lead with the lowest scores of the championship. Holding onto her impressive lead to take home the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship title, Kelly Zhao (Station Creek GC – North) finished the day with an even par (140) on the championship. Earning the silver was Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC) with a solid finish of one-under par (143), while the bronze went to Wendy Li (Cedar Brae GC) who battled her way up the leaderboard during the final round (146).

Reflecting on the championship win, Zhao said “I feel great, I mean this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! In comparison to yesterday, today’s round was steady with a few ups and downs. The last hole was more challenging today, as my putt pulled a 360 out of the cup for a tough bogey”. Heading home with her gold, Zhao is looking forward to off-season training and the 2021 championship season.

Making massive moves on the course today, Cale Marontate (Kingsville G&CC) takes the title for the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship. In an impressive turn of events, Marontate jumped twelve positions to give him the win with an overall three-over par (147). Taking the silver in a tie, Matthew Javier (Scarborough G&CC) and Jager Pain (Public Player) finished the championship with a plus-four (148).

Teeing off with the 1:00 p.m. group, Marontate said “the putter was working today, I was hitting more greens and fairways, and putting myself in a good position to make some birdies. Being in the fifth last group helped, as I wasn’t nervous at all on the last stretch, thinking I wasn’t in it”. As all golfers know too well, being in your head on the course can be a challenge, whereas Marontate “was stress free on the back nine and shot a 33”. Marontate is looking forward to playing some fun golf this fall and hopefully getting in a few rounds with his buddies.

In recognition of the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ Championship, Jager Pain (Public Player) takes home the gold, while Eric Zhao (Bayview G&CC) and Lucas Chi (Station Creek GC) finished in a tie for silver (150). For the Ontario Peewee (U13) Girls’ Championship, Michelle Xing (National Pines GC) was awarded the gold (149), with silver going to Shauna Liu (Station Creek GC – North) (154), and bronze to Celina Yeo (West Haven G&CC) (158).

Gormley, Ont. – Competitors arriving early for the first round of the Ontario Public Amateur Championship Presented by Baka at Meadowbrook G&CC were greeted with cool and calm grey skies. While calmer, duller conditions were the backdrop for the earlier first waves of tee times, later competitors first dealt with sunnier skies and breezier play mixed in with late strong winds and a cloudier atmosphere.

With three championship flights taking to the course, golfers in the A flight (gross) and two net flights (B and C) tackled the beautiful Meadowbrook conditions. Spectacular tree lined lush fairways were paired with greens requiring accurate approach shots, providing a tough yet fair track for day one of the annual two-day tournament.

In the A Flight which is a gross competition, Gavin Smith of Orangeville closed out the first 18 holes with an even par 71 to take the lead into day 2. His two birdie back nine sees him leading by two over Joel Clark of Toronto and Kevin Holloway of Aurora who each shot respectable 73’s (+2). One stroke behind at +3 sees three players who all hope they can make moves on day two. In total 10 players sit within 4 strokes of the lead which should really ramp up play.

B Flight and the first net score competition saw both Kyle Stolys of Richmond Hill and Tony Darbyson of Brooklin atop the leaderboard with a first round -3 under. Their identical net scores of 36/32 for 68 has them sitting two shots ahead of Donald Dasti of Whitby sitting at -1. Things tighten up with a large group between even to +5 all of whom will be looking for possible Top 10 positions tomorrow.

Rounding out the leaderboard is the C Flight which again is a net competition. A strong three under on his back nine has Andrew Garron of Kingston holding a four shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. Sitting three shots behind at +3 was Zachary Peters of Hamilton. In at +4 are Steve Stone of Whitby and Mark Rodrigues of Milton.

For many competitors this was their first experience competing in a Golf Ontario championship while others are seasoned veterans. The Baka Public Amateur Championship provides the perfect opportunity for those interested in trying a competitive tournament while providing gross and net flights which provide similar handicap groupings. Anyone who has considered trying one of Golf Ontario’s events should look to the 2021 Baka Public Championship and consider it.

With a little more experience on the course after today, the second round promises to be an exciting and competitive conclusion to the 2020 Baka Public Championship.  Final round tee times are set for 7:30am Wednesday morning.

Cambridge, ON – The weather couldn’t have been more agreeable as the players teed off for round one of the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship at Cambridge Golf Club. Golf Ontario will be recognizing both the Ontario Peewee (U13) and Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ champions following tomorrow’s second (and final) round.

On the girls’ side of the championship, an impressive round of 4-under 68 gave Kelly Zhao (Station Creek GC – North) to give her a 4 stroke lead after the first round of the Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship. Tied for second with even par 72’s are Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC) and Shauna Liu (Station Creek GC – North). Liu is the current leader for the Peewee (U13) Girls’, with Michelle Xing (National Pines GC) and Elliana Buhagair (Deer Creek GC) following with two and four over par respectively.

Zhao’s round included an incredible 3 eagles, and reflecting on her round today, Zhao said “my putting and drives were working really well for me. The course is quite narrow so I had to make sure my placement was accurate and that I followed through with my line. I carded my three eagles by hitting my three wood, which was bang on every time and got me really close to the pin”. Heading into the final round tomorrow, Zhao is looking to “stay confident, energized and hydrated throughout the day, while focusing on what’s to come”.

Taking his place at the top of the Boys’ leaderboard after today’s round, with a two-under par 70 is Bantam (U15) player Jax Sisson (Ambassador GC). Sisson’s round included 3 birdies and only 1 birdie to give him a two stroke lead heading into the final round. Close on his tail and sitting atop the leaderboard for the Peewee (U13) Boys’, is Jager Pain (Public Player), with a solid round that included three birdies for an even par 72. In third place on the overall leaderboard and second for the Peewee, player Brayden Card (Galt Country Club), finished his round with a one-over 73.

Gormley, ON – As summer slowly slips away, we prepare to tee up the Ontario Public Amateur Championship, presented by Baka Mobile, at Meadowbrook Golf Club from September 1st to 2nd. For many competitors, this is their first experience competing in a Golf Ontario championship while others are seasoned veterans. The Baka Public Championship provides the perfect opportunity for those interested in trying a competitive tournament, while providing gross and net flights which provide similar handicap groupings.

Open only to players of the Golf Ontario Public Player Program and members of a semi-public golf course, the championship will see players compete in three separate flights. Players in the A flight will compete in a gross competition, while the B and C flights will compete in a net competition. Players in the B flight will also be eligible for the overall A flight, as they play off the same tees.

The classic championship parkland golf course is a great experience for golfers of all levels, as the 153 acre property features flawless bentgrass greens, tactically placed bunkers, and a series of flowing brooks and dangerously positioned water hazards. Head Professional of Meadowbrook Golf Club, Sheldon Friske, describes the course as “a first shot golf course. If you put the ball in the fairway off the tee, you have a clear shot to the green. Miss the fairway by a little bit and there’s some bunkering and trees around the greens that you’ll have to deal with. The rough is also thick enough that it will affect the second shot, even if only off by a foot”. Right off the start, players can expect “a challenging tee shot as we flipped the nines this year, making for a very challenging first hole”.

With three previous Public Amateur Champions returning to the field, they will be battling for the chance to add another name plate to the trophy. Returning players include 2013 winner, Dan Kavanagh (Scarborough), 2014 winner, Peter Willis (Aurora), and 2011 and 2015 winner, Arnold Johnson (Brampton).

We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Baka Public Amateur Championship will be donated to Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation.

Cambridge, ON – Taking to the course from August 31^st to September 1^st at Cambridge Golf Club, Golf Ontario will welcome the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship. This championship will also see Golf Ontario crown a winner for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship.

Cambridge Golf Club is a “mature golf course with beautifully manicured fairways and greens, with two new holes that have been back in play for the last two seasons”, said Head Professional at Cambridge Golf Club, Carla Munch-Miranda, when asked to describe the course. “Being a mature golf course, it is a little tighter now, so players need to be on their game and be sure of their placement on the tee”, as the long narrow fairways offer a challenge before the defensive greens come into play. In viewing the course layout, players will find that hole six is rated the hardest hole on the course, with bunkers and fescue surrounding the green. Having hosted one of the Junior (U19) Boys’ qualifiers in July, our “volunteers are ready and the members are excited to host the event and be a part of the championship atmosphere”.

The Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship will consist of athletes from the following two qualifiers: Sawmill Golf Club (August 14) and Lakeridge Links Golf Club (August 26). For leaderboard information on qualifiers, please click the golf course name. Golf Ontario will also recognize the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ Champion at this competition. The field of 54 Boys’ is expected to be strong, as the winner of the 2019 Ontario Peewee Boys’ Championship, Jordan Hwang (York Downs G&CC), looks to challenge the winners of the qualifiers for the championship title.

As for the Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship, it will consist of athletes from the following two qualifiers: Sawmill Golf Club (August 14) and Lakeridge Links Golf Club (August 26). Golf Ontario will also recognize the Ontario Peewee (U13) Girls’ Champion at this competition. Players to keep an eye on include the winner of the 2019 Ontario Peewee Girls’ Championship, Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC), and the 2019 Ontario Bantam Girls’ Champion, Alexa Ouellet (Weston G&CC), as they return to the field looking for another title.

We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship will be donated to Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation.

First contested in 1929, the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship is a 36-hole competition featuring the top Bantam (U15) male golfers from across the province. Key Provincial Competitions Protocols/Restrictions (subject to change)

• No caddies permitted. (all events)
• No spectators, including coaches and media, permitted. (**Exception: Players 18 & Under may have one accompanying adult)
• No motorized carts permitted. (**Exception: Single rider carts only for Senior & Disability Championships)
• All events will be a single tee start – no shotguns or split tees.
• Restricted field numbers. (see individual championships)
• Qualifiers will have limited field sizes. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Melancthon, ON – It was a spectacular day for the final round of the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship at Shelburne Golf and Country Club. With the weather on everyone’s side today, the players looked to finish their final round on a high note and take advantage of the sun and the calm winds. Both the Ontario Juvenile (U17) and Junior (U19) Girls’ Champions were recognized at today’s award ceremony.

Heading home with very full hands, the 2020 Ontario Juvenile and Junior Girls’ Champion is Team Ontario member Katie Cranston (Oakville GC). Cranston carded a two-over 74 on the final day, to finish a stellar week of golf at 6-under par 282, for an impressive 4 stroke victory. While reflecting on the title and today’s round, Cranston said “I can’t complain, it was pretty good but I had a rough start. I started with three bogeys and then I birdied four, so after that I started to believe in myself more and thought that this is possible”. When asked how it feels to win not only her first title, but two titles at once, Cranston replied ecstatically “it feels amazing! I have two more years to compete in Junior, so I’m really looking forward to the 2021 season”.

A strong group of Juvenile (U17) players dominated the (U19) leaderboard this week, as Nicole Gal (Oakville GC) takes home the silver with a final round 70  to finish the week a 2-under (286), and Jillian A Friyia (Highland CC) and Rozlyn Rooke (Blue Springs GC) shared the bronze in a three-way tie (289) with Junior (U19) player, Raesa Sheikh (TPC at Osprey Valley).

Devoted owner, designer, and builder of Shelburne Golf and Country Club, Sam Young, said “it was a pleasure to host this event and I think it was truly important to have it. Thank you Golf Ontario for giving me a call, as I was happy to step up to the plate and get things going here. I am very impressed with these athletes as they played great golf this week. I have a bunch of ten year old girls to teach tonight, so I’ll be a little more inspired”. In an interview following the awards ceremony, Young expressed his appreciation for the junior golfers, saying “it’s so different from when I got into the business many years ago, as more girls’ are athletes now. They all conducted themselves so well, that it was almost like you were watching a mini LGPA tour. They really handle themselves well and can they ever hit it, like really hit it!” The Ontario and Professional Golf Association of Canada Hall of Famer, Sam Young, has coached the likes of Brittany Marchand and Augusta James.

Melancthon, ON – Round three presented the players with more windy conditions, as everyone at the Ontario Junior (U19) Girl’s Championship looked to make some moves. When the weather finally warmed up at Shelburne Golf and Country Club, just four groups remaining on the back nine, and it seemed the damage had already been done as most of the field struggled to gain strokes on the leaderboard in today’s round.

Unaffected by the wind, Katie Cranston (Oakville GC) completed a solid round while remaining at the top of the leaderboard with an overall score of eight under par (208). Sitting in second is the round one leader, Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), after a plus three round thanks to some tougher greens.

Climbing the leaderboard in a tie for third is Lauren Zaretsky (Ladies GC of Toronto) and Rozlyn Rooke (Blue Springs GC). Shooting a one under and even par, the players both finished off with four birdies and three bogeys. Reflecting on today’s round, Rooke said “I feel like I was more focused both mentally and physically today. I zoned in on my shots and even though the wind was difficult at times, most of my drives were pretty good. I was able to focus on how far I wanted to carry the ball and where I wanted it to end up”. Rooke is looking to carry the same positive energy heading into the final round tomorrow.
