Shelburne G&CC welcomes the 2020 Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship from August 18-21

Melancthon, ON – As we now find ourselves later into August, we’ve reached the halfway point of our 2020 championship season. Teeing off from August 18th to 21st at Shelburne Golf and Country Club, we welcome the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship. Golf Ontario will also recognize the Ontario Juvenile (U17) Girls’ Champion at this competition.

The picturesque semi-private, 18-hole golf course, is located on the western edge of the Niagara Escarpment. Professionally designed, the course plays over silica sand bunkers and six spring-fed ponds to provide a challenge for golfers of all levels. With course enhancements made over the last few years, nine new tee decks have added 230 yards to the course to create more of a challenge. Players will also enjoy one of the finest practice facilities in Southern Ontario, with a 10,000 square foot putting and chipping green, practice bunker, and a one third of an acre grassed tee area with strategically place target greens.

Due to a limitation to field sizes with Golf Ontario safety protocols, a maximum of 99 players will be competing for the title. The field is expected to be very strong, with winners of the Ontario Bantam Girls’ Championship Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Weston G&CC), Raesa Sheikh (TPC at Osprey Valley), and Alex Ouellet (Weston G&CC), battling for the chance to capture another title. Also attending the championship are the 2017 and 2018 Ontario Peewee Girls’ Champions, Isabella Ferguson (Kanata G&CC) and Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC). Team Ontario members to keep an eye on include: Bo Brown (Blue Springs GC), Katie Cranston (Oakville GC), Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC), Alexis McMurray (Glen Abbey GC), and Ella Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC).

We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Ontario Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship will be donated to the Headwaters Health Care Foundation.

First tee off of the day for round 1 on August 18th is set for 7:30 a.m. To follow the leaderboard, click here.

Cougar Claws his way to Victory at Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship

Otterville, ON – Beautiful sunny conditions ushered in today’s final round for the 98th annual Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. It was a very competitive field throughout the entire week, and today’s round was no different with the Championship coming down to the last few windy holes to determine the 2020 champion.

Clawing his way to victory down the final stretch was Golf Canada Amateur Squad Member, Cougar Collins, with an even par round (72) to finish the Championship at 2-under. He got some help from second and third round leader Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC), who stumbled just slightly down the back stretch and lost the lead after a double bogey on 13. Latter impressively fought back to remain tied with Collins until the seventeenth where he would drop a shot once again. Latter finished at 5-over (77) on the day, and a bogey on the 18th would help secure Collins the victory. Tied for second with Latter was Thomas Giroux (North Club of Halton), who finished the day and the week with a solid even par.

After today’s exciting win, Collins (TPC at Osprey Valley), spoke about his play “definitely not the start I was looking for, but I battled back pretty quick with birdies on the second and third holes”. He felt his swing and iron shots were very solid which helped him through the battling of leaders on the back nine.

He also spoke on what the Championship meant to him, saying “This is definitely at the top of my career accomplishment, this was pretty awesome for sure… especially being in Ontario and being my first time on Team Canada and winning the Ontario Amateur ”. Collins joins some phenomenal talent and names including Garrett Rank (2018), 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1990 & 1992), Gerry Kesselring (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953), professional players Jon Mills (2001), Corey Conners (2010), Albin Choi (2012), Chris Hemmerich (2014) and Gary Cowan, who holds the record for the most Ontario Amateur Championships with nine.

Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for their support of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. To Otter Creek Golf Club, and all their hard-working staff, thank you for being gracious hosts and for providing us with such valuable volunteers. Lastly, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners, Adidas, Taylor Made, Modern Golf, Dormie Workshop, Durham Artificial Grass, Humber College, Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, Baka Mobile, and Play Golf Myrtle Beach. Latter Stays Leader after Round 3 of Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek GC

Otterville, ON – Round 3 brought us a beautiful and calm morning as players looked to make some noise on moving day at the 98th Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek Golf Club. The weather warmed up, as did the competition, in a day that produced the lowest scores yet. Multiple players went low in hopes of taking over the lead from Robbie Latter but your second round leader had plans of his own.

Remaining the Championship leader is Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC) who fired a stellar 3-under (69) round including 5 birdies and an eagle to now sit 5-under overall after three days. Hot on his heels however is Cougar Collins (TPC at Osprey Valley) who fired the competitions best round of 6-under (66) so far through three days. Collins now sits 2-under on the tournament and in second place after setting the pace with an eagle on the third hole. Also firing a tremendous round was Thomas Giroux (The North Club of Halton) who finds himself in third place at even par. Giroux went as low as 7-under on his round before finishing up at a tidy 4-under (66).

After today’s play, Latter (a former member of Team Ontario), said “ ya I got off to a rough start, but quickly got it back on the front nine so I kept rolling and playing aggressive”. He felt his putting got him back on track after rolling in some birdies on 4, 6, 7, and 9. He stated his game plan for the final round is “just stay aggressive, keep hitting it,…that’ll be the important thing”.

Final round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. and if today was an indication of the scoring we could see tomorrow, the final round looks like it could to be very exciting. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official page here.

Latter takes charge in Round 2 of Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek GC

Otterville, ON – A cool, calm morning kicked off round 2 of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek Golf Club. The temperature would quickly rise, as did the play of the players, in an exciting day on this 98th playing of the prestigious competition. We had many more players in red numbers today with calmer winds and players learning the course.

Taking the lead today with a stellar bogey free round was Robbie Latter (Credit Valley G&CC) who now leads the Championship with his strong four-under round today, including 4 birdies. Latter now sits at two-under overall after two days for a 2 shot lead. Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club) and local favorite Peyton Callens (Otter Creek GC) both fired solid 3-under pars today to follow closely behind at even par total after two rounds. Jackson Bowery (St Thomas G&CC) and Thomas Code (Highland CC) sit four strokes back with two round totals of 2 over.

Round two leader, Latter (a former member of Team Ontario), said after “my round felt really solid, having no bogeys and no real hiccups…it all just came together”. When asked about his game plan for moving forward in this highly touted competition, Latter reflected “just keep it going, keep rolling… this is really cool as it’s the Provincial Amateur Championship, which has always been a goal of mine”. Latter is currently heading into his second year at Southern Mississippi, Majoring in Business Administration after spending two seasons with Team Ontario.

After Golf Ontario makes the cut tonight down to 42nd and ties, tee times for the third round begin Thursday at 7:30 a.m. With 17 golfers within 6 shots of the leader, it should be a very interesting last 2 days of the championship. Crowded Leaderboard After Round 1 at Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship from Otter Creek GC

Otterville, ON – Windy conditions welcomed the players to the challenging Otter Creek Golf Club for the first round of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. Thankfully early cool and breezy weather warmed up as did the competition on the opening day. Living up to expectations, the first day proved to be very competitive, with eleven players within three strokes of the lead.

Leading the pack, however, after day one was David Lang (Donalda Club) who fired a solid one under to take a one stroke lead into round 2. Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), Kyle Chung (Brampton GC), Thomas Code (Highland CC), Jonathan Cranton (Donalda Club), Nathan Kraynyk (Eagles Nest GC) and Arnold Johnson (Public Player) all sit tied in second place, one shot back after each scoring a solid even par round.

Round one leader, Lang, commented after “You know what I played pretty good, it’s a tough golf course so I was pretty happy that I grinded hard out there and after a couple bad shots, was still able to make a few good par saves to keep my round going including a long one putt on 16”. When asked what his game plan for round two consisted of, Lang reflected “just keep playing the same way. My game plan was to hit a lot fairways and greens as you can easily hit double and triple bogeys out there”. Going into round two tomorrow, Lang tees off at 8:14 a.m. and is looking to continue his steady play.

Tee times for the second round begin Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. For future results and information on the championship, visit the official championship page here.

2020 Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship invades Otter Creek GC August 11-14

Otterville, ON Heading into our third of nine championships, Golf Ontario is thrilled to welcome the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship to Otter Creek Golf Club from August 11th to 14th.

Designed by renowned Canadian Golf Course architect Dick Kirkpatrick, Otter Creek Golf Club opened its doors to the public on July 1, 2008. Measuring just over 7,100 yards and featuring six sets of tees, Otter Creek was designed to challenge players of all skill levels. Golf Manager, John Hall, said “they can expect a challenge that’s for sure! Players will need creativity around the greens, as they have a lot of angulation and slopes. The toughest hole here is typically the ninth, with a long par four straight up a hill and a big ravine right in front of the green. Another one to watch for that players always talk about after the round is the tough par three on number twelve”. Otter Creek has hosted quite a few qualifiers and tours, but with the bustling season they’ve been experiencing, they are very excited to welcome players, volunteers, and staff for the championship.

The Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship will consist of athletes from the following four qualifiers: Tangle Creek GC (July 16), Black Bear Ridge GC (July 20), Shelburne G&CC (July 21), and Grand Niagara GC (July 22). For leaderboard information on qualifiers, please click the golf course name.

Due to a limitation to field sizes with Golf Ontario safety protocols, a maximum of 114 players will be battling for the title. The field is expected to be exceptionally strong with the likes of 2018/2020 Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Champion, Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club), and 2019 Ontario Men’s Amateur runner-up Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club) battling for the title. Some other players to keep an eye on are Ontario Golf Hall of Famer Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), Team Canada National Amateur Squad member Cougar Collins (Rocky Crest GC), and former National Hockey League player Michael Cammalleri (The National Club of Canada). Cammalleri played in the National Hockey League from 2002 to 2018, most recently playing for the Edmonton Oilers, and won the final Men’s Amateur qualifier at Grand Niagara Golf Club.

Team Ontario members competing include: Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui GC), Ben MacLean (St. Catherine’s G&CC), LukeDelGobbo (Lookout Point GC), Jeffrey Fang (Station Creek GC – North), Michael Ikejiani (Barrie CC), and Thomas Latter (Credit Valley GC).

We are also excited to have introduced a Front Line Workers donation program this year as part of our registration process, to give back to the local communities we will be playing in. The Front Line Workers donations from the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship will be donated to The Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation.

First tee off of the day for round one on August 11th is set for 7:30 a.m. To follow the leaderboard, click here.

Naro Claims the 2020 Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship

Dalewood, ON – Lots of sunshine, smiles and great play were found on the course today for the fourth and final round of the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship from Dalewood Golf Club. With the Women’s Mid-Amateur title awarded to Nonie Marler (Public Player) following the end of round three yesterday, today the players battled for the Women’s Amateur Championship.

Sealing the deal with four consistent rounds of golf, Michigan State University golfer, Sydney Naro (Public Player), takes home the Ontario Women’s Amateur crown with an even par to end the championship (285). In a great fight for the silver and bronze, Brooke Rivers (Brampton GC) and Kristen Giles (Eagle River GC), went stroke for stroke most of the round with Rivers prevailing to finish second, one stroke behind Naro. Giles finished 2 shots off the pace for her third place finish. With three late birdies down the stretch, Rivers really put pressure on Naro to hang on to the lead. Giles also had a birdie streak of her own down the back nine but just like Rivers, couldn’t quite catch the leader.

The conditions were a lot calmer, so there was definitely a chance for a lot of birdies out there. I just tried to play my game one shot at a time and it worked out pretty well”, said Naro when asked what made the difference for the final round today. As a varsity golfer for Michigan State, Naro plays “out of Forest Akers West when in Michigan, but in Canada, I play out of Windermere Golf and Country Club”. When asked if any holes were more challenging than others, Naro explained “the par threes are definitely very long and I’d say number ten was a tough one. I was trying to make birdie all week and couldn’t make birdie on number ten. Number one was a little scary as it’s a long hole, but other that than I really liked the course and had a lot of fun”.

Golf Ontario would like to thank the players, staff, and volunteers for their support of the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship. To Dalewood Golf Club, Head Golf Professional Brad Pemberton, and all their hard-working staff, thank you for being gracious hosts and for providing us with such valuable volunteers. Lastly, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners, Adidas, Taylor Made, Modern Golf, Dormie Workshop, Durham Artificial Grass, Humber College, Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, Baka Mobile, and Play Golf Myrtle Beach. We are grateful for your continued support.

Marler Takes Home the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Title – Final Round Tomorrow for Women’s Amateur

Dalewood, ON – With the third and final round coming to an end for the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Dalewood Golf Club, Public Player Nonie Marler (Marine Drive GC) took home the prestigious title. The weather couldn’t have been more welcoming today, especially after the rain delays and wind we’ve experienced earlier in the week.

Three near flawless rounds left Marler in a great position for today’s win, with four birdies on the day (218). Climbing the leaderboard in the final round, Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC), played her best round of the championship finishing with one under par (222). Falling to third, 2017 Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC), completed the day with a tough 76 (224).

The conditions were certainly interesting and as it dried out over the course of the last couple of days, the greens sped up and it’s been great to be out here”, said Marler while reflecting on the rounds. With the circumstances surrounding Covid, we are dealing with “very interesting times so it’s an absolute pleasure and honour to be able to play actual tournament golf at the moment, and certainly for the last couple of days in the company of Judith. Judith and I played together last summer in the Canadian Mid-Amateur’s, so it’s nice to be able to play with her again; Terrill as well and then Lindsay today”. In closing, “Rob (Watson) thank you much, you and your team, you guys were fantastic and you have done a great job here so far in spite of these very interesting times. To Brad, his guys and gals in the pro shop, and Jerry Fox the Super Intendent and his crew, thank you very much. A big thank you to the many volunteers who took the time out of their week to assist with this event as well. All in all, thank you for letting a Vancouverite play with you ladies this week!”

High Winds & Higher Scores For Round 2 of the Ontario Women’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championship

Dalewood, ON – The start of round two came with sunshine and clear skies at Dalewood Golf Club for the Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship. Due to the severe weather delays experienced yesterday, eleven groups resumed round one at 8:00 a.m. and round two was pushed back an hour to an 8:30 a.m. start. As the day progressed, the wind increased and so did the scores.

With the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship moving into tomorrow for their third and final round, leader of round two Nonie Marler, Public Player, completed her round with a notable four birdies and three bogeys (144). In a two way tie for second is 2017 champion Judith Kyrinis, (Granite GC), and Lindsey Hummel (St. Thomas G&CC). Following round three will be the awards ceremony for the Mid-Amateur division only.

Afterwards Maler, who also plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club in BC, had this to say about her round. “I feel like it was an improvement over yesterday, so I was pleased with that. I had a good game plan and committed to my shots more”. She added, “I had one practice round under my belt and having the first round with two rounds now, I felt like I knew the course a lot better today to be able to give myself the best opportunity possible and really capitalize on it”.

Climbing the leaderboard of the Women’s Amateur Championship is GO Public Player, Sydney Naro, with one under on the front and two over on the back, for an overall one over through 2 rounds (142). Following in second with four birdies for the day is first round leader Claire Hernandez (Thornhill Club). In third at three over, a six way tie to battle it out tomorrow; Brooke Rivers (Brampton GC), Sarah Beqaj (Toronto GC), Sarah-Eve Rheaume (Golf Quebec Club), Sadie Dewinton-Davies (Public Player), Nonie Marler (Public Player), and Vanessa Boroviols (Weston G&CC). This evening, Golf Ontario will cut the field down to 42 plus ties.

Rain Delays’ set Back Round 1 of the Ontario Women’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championship at Dalewood GC

Dalewood, ON – While we know the golf courses needed rain, today was not the ideal day for our ladies to see it happen. As the weather continued to prevail, Dalewood Golf Club welcomed the 2020 Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship for their opening round of four.

With a 3.5 hour weather delay at 9:30 a.m., play resumed at 1:15 p.m. only to be postponed again at 7:30 p.m… After the first weather delay, number eight was removed from play due to an excess of water flooding on the green. Because of the lengthened weather delay, eleven groups (11:32 a.m. to 1:22 p.m.) did not finish their first round. Tomorrow morning will resume play at 8:00 a.m. with the players who did not finish their round today.

Currently leading is Claire Hernandez, (Thornhill Club) sitting at 2 under including four birdies on her round. In a tie for second at one under, we have five players; Sarah Beqaj (Toronto GC), Madeline Marck-Shrek (Bridgewater CC), Nicole Gal (Oakville GC), Ava Koukofikas (Meadowbrook G&CC), and Alessandra Nagayo (Don Valley GC). Hall of Famer Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC), currently leads in the Mid-Amateur category after a plus one round with much golf still left to play.

Pushing back an hour back to allow for round one to finish, round two will being at 8:30 a.m. Follow the full leaderboard here.
