As 2020 comes to a close, it is time to reflect back on the year that was. It goes without saying that 2020 was a year like no other. And while we all know it came with significant challenges for everyone, we also know that there were diamonds in the rough in 2020 and golf was one of those bright spots. Quite simply … golf was an important release, both physically and mentally for both existing golfers, and equally importantly, new players to the game. From the second golf courses were allowed to open back on May 16, protocols were put in place that made golf courses into one of the safest places to be throughout this pandemic, and these safety measures allowed people to enjoy this great game like never before. With this in mind, today is an appropriate day to look back and celebrate some of the milestones from 2020 in Ontario golf. Thanks to each and every golfer, staff member, coach, professional, volunteer, owner/operator, and all others for your contributions to the ‘year of golf’

January

The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada and Golf Ontario reached a six-year agreement in partnership with Woodington Lakes Golf Club to host and conduct the Ontario Open. This first tournament, an official tournament on the Tour’s 2020 schedule, was set for Tottenham, Ontario, on August 27-30.

The Ontario Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2020 was announced, but has been postponed due to COVID-19. The newest acclaimed member, Danny Mijovic, would enter the Professional Golfer category after 35 plus years as a golf professional. Tim O’Connor also received the Lorne Rubenstein Media Award, which is presented annually to accredited members of the Ontario media for “major contributions to golf”. We look forward to celebrating these two individuals in 2021.

February

Golf Ontario celebrated and recognized the 2019 Golf Ontario Order of Merit player winners and Volunteer Award winners. The Female Player of the year was awarded to Emily Zhu, while the Male Player of the year went to Garrett Rank. Click here, for other 2019 Golf Ontario Order of Merit winners.

Playing a critical role in the Golf Ontario organization, Golf Ontario recognized the following Volunteer Award Winners: 2019 Volunteer of the Year: Joyce McCrae. Distinguished Service Award winners: Margaret Grieve and Gilles Hurtubise. Honorary Life Director Award: Kathy Pilkey, Ian Murray, and Chris Osborne.

Two new partners joined the Golf Ontario team, to help bring more value to the Association and its’ members. Modern Golf joined as the Official Club Fitting and Repair partner of Golf Ontario, and Dormie Workshop joined as the Official Custom Headcover Provider of Golf Ontario.

As the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic enveloped not only Canada but the world, the government ordered the shutdown of non-essential businesses. This shutdown would force Golf Ontario to begin planning for an adaptation of the 2020 Championship schedule, as we moved to remote-working.

Mike Kelly, Executive Director of Golf Ontario, addressed players, members, and stakeholders with a message, as the COVID-19 challenge continued to evolve rapidly.

April

National Volunteer Week 2020: April 19 to 25. Golf Ontario gave recognition to the volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the game of golf and showed appreciation to all who have been an essential part of our organization.

May

The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada announced that the 2020 season had been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis. The Ontario Open, which was originally scheduled for August 27-30, was postponed until 2021.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, most golf courses across Canada did not open on schedule this spring. Ontario Golf Courses were permitted to open May 16, with stringent anti-COVID safeguards set in place.

June

As public health concerns due to the COVID-19 global pandemic continue, Golf Canada in partnership with Golf Ontario cancelled the 2020 World Junior Girls Championship. Postponed till 2021, the event was originally schedule for September 28 to October 3 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario.

Adjusting the 2020 Championship schedule to fit within the restrictions of COVID-19, Golf Ontario released the new 2020 Championship schedule. With additional time needed to ensure that Golf Ontario Championships were staged in the most safe and responsible manner possible given the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Golf Ontario had to make significant revisions to the 2020 schedule of championships. While able to maintain a strong slate of the most important championships, the new schedule consisted of nine events.

As a result of a highly successful pilot program launched in Alberta, Youth on Course announced its expansion with Golf Ontario and Golf Canada. Youth on Course is a non-profit organization providing young people with access to opportunities through subsidized golf, college scholarships, paid internships, and a caddie program.

July

Golf Ontario announced the addition of Durham Artificial Grass to their family of partners, to help continue to bring more value to the Association and its’ members. Durham Artificial Grass is a provider of high-quality home practice installations, including simulators and putting greens.

The first championship of the season, the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Championship, took place at Saugeen Golf Club. With an impressive finish in his fourth and final round, Nolan Piazza (Cherry Hill Club) took home the Ontario Junior (U19) Boys’ Championship title for the second time in three years.

Winning the Ontario Juvenile (U17) Boys’ Championship title was Andreas Diogenous (Whistle Bear GC).

August

The Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship at Dalewood Golf Club teed off a busy month of championships. With the third and final round coming to an end for the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Public Player Nonie Marler (Marine Drive GC) took home the prestigious title with three near flawless rounds.

In the final round of the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship, Michigan State University golfer, Sydney Naro (Public Player), brought home the crown with an even par round to end the championship at even overall (285).

Otter Creek Golf Club hosted the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship. Clawing his way to victory down the final stretch was Golf Canada Amateur Squad Member, Cougar Collins, with an even par round (72) to finish the Championship at two-under.

Team Ontario member, Katie Cranston, went home with very full hands following her impressive Ontario Juvenile (U17) and Junior (U19) Girls’ Championship win at Shelburne Golf and Country Club.

September

Golf Ontario enjoyed a day of golf at The Nest at Friday Harbour to help support the Golf Canada Foundation COVID Relief Fund. This fund was to help golf courses and their employees and golfers stay safe while also thanking front-line workers through encouraging additional play and welcoming juniors to further experience the game.

Cambridge Golf Club hosted the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship, while Golf Ontario also recognized a winner for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship. Holding onto her impressive lead to take home the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship title was Kelly Zhao (Station Creek GC – North).

Making massive moves on the course in the final round, Cale Marontate (Kingsville G&CC) secured the title for the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship.

In recognition of the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ Championship, Jager Pain (Public Player) took home the gold, while Michelle Xing (National Pines GC) was awarded the gold (149) for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Girls’ Championship.

As summer slowly slipped away, the Ontario Public Amateur Championship was hosted by Meadowbrook Golf Club. The overall winner and winner of the A flight (gross) competition was Aurora’s Kevin Holloway.

The B Flight and the first net score competition finished in regulation with a two-way tie between Troy Darbyson and Ken Brace, both of Brooklin, requiring a three-hole playoff. Darbyson had the low round through both rounds, shooting a 68 in round one to help build his early lead and hang on to reach the playoff holes, from which he would emerge victorious.

The C flight Championship also ended in regulation with a two-way tie for the lead between Zachary Peters and Andrew Garron. After a closely contested playoff, Hamilton’s Peters emerged as the winner of the C flight.

The stunning Taboo Muskoka Resort and Golf hosted the 2020 Ontario Senior Men’s and Women’s Championship. Having a fantastic season after finishing second place in the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC) captured her second Ontario Senior Women’s Championship title.

Securing the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship title, Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club) completed the final round two strokes ahead of silver medalist Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood).

As championship season continued, the 2020 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship was hosted at the Loyalist Country Club. Holding his own and leading the way for the entirety of the three days, Ryan Tsang (Cedar Brae GC) seized his first Golf Ontario Championship title, as the winner of the 2020 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

After a very successful launch in 2019, the Ontario Disability Golf Championship would return in 2020 at the beautiful Woodington Lakes Golf Club. As part of this year’s event, Special Olympics Ontario was pleased to announce a partnership with Woodington Lake Golf Club to help support and promote the event. Special Olympics Ontario would provide volunteer and coach training, as well as assistance with the recruitment of athletes and volunteers to help stage this world class event.

Defending the Men’s 2020 Ontario Disability Championship title, for the second year in a row, was Kurtis Barkley (Cedar Glen GC) after an impressive showing of 145 over two rounds.

On the Women’s side, also taking home the 2020 Ontario Disability Championship title for a second year in a row, was Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point Golf Links) (171).

Golf Ontario also gave out their annual Scholarship Awards in September to some lucky and deserving recipients. Winning of our largest scholarship this year, Aidan Hussey (Barcovan GC) was awarded the Craig Revell scholarship. Read more, here.

October

On October 6th, twenty golf lovers took on the formidable challenge to walk one-hundred holes of golf in one day to raise money and awareness for Youth on Course. From sunrise to sunset, participants from Golf Ontario, Golf Canada, TaylorMade, adidas, and 94.9 The Rock walked and played one-hundred holes of golf with proceeds going to support the great new Youth on Course program.

Hosted at Black Bear Ridge Golf Course, the 1^st Annual Golf Ontario Provincial Super Camp took place over Thanksgiving weekend in Belleville, Ontario. The first two days of testing included the Golf Canada National Testing Protocols, a Session with Sport Psychologist Dr. Charles Fitzsimmons, and an Interactive Rules Session with Jim Davidson of the OVGA.

Holding her position on the leaderboard for the Junior Girls’, Alessandra Nagayo (Don Valley GC) took home the championship title with a total of one over par (145) and a nine-stroke lead over the silver medalist.

Advancing on the Junior Boys’ leaderboard to win the gold medal, Ashton McCulloch (Cataraqui G&CC) secured the title with an eagle on seven and one under par on the day (147).

Golf Ontario gave back to frontline workers in our championship communities, through the 2020 championship season registration process. As part of our registration process, we normally include the opportunity for golfers to donate to a cause. Historically, these donations have gone to support junior golf in Ontario. During registration for the 2020 championship season, we offered golfers the opportunity to donate to Frontline Workers. All funds generated through these donations would then be divided up and given back equally to a local hospital in each of our championship communities. Read more, here.

On Tuesday October 20^th, Golf Ontario hosted the annual Volunteer Appreciation Day at the beautiful Wooden Sticks Golf Course. With COVID-19 continuing to affect how we celebrate with each other, Golf Ontario hosted their 2020 Volunteer Recognition Day online, recognizing a few shinning individuals who have gone above and beyond their volunteer commitments. This year’s very deserving 2020 award recipients were as follows: 2020 Volunteer of the Year, Lee Griffin. Honorary Life Director, John Swift. Dick Grimm Distinguished Award, Jim Bristow. The Paul “Fitz” Fitzgerald Award, Darrell Peters.

Team Ontario welcomed many new faces to the 2021 Team Ontario squad, which features many of the best young golfers in the province. Featuring eighteen members as part of the soon to be launched Junior Golf Pathway, seven members returned from the 2020 team and would be joined by eleven fresh faces.

December

Golf Ontario announced the launch of the upcoming 2021 Provincial level Rules of Golf Webinar Series. Beginning in the second week in January, Golf Ontario will be offering a 10-week webinar series on the Provincial Level Rules of Golf as part of the Golf Ontario Rules Ready program. Instructed by nationally certified Golf Canada Referees, the webinar series is aimed at furthering the participant’s knowledge of the Rules of Golf and will take an in-depth look at the concepts, procedures and outcomes that are an integral part of today’s game.

The annual 12 Days of Golf took place from December 7 to 19, with all proceeds this year going to support junior programs across Ontario. This included supporting the launch of First Tee in 2021, an exciting new program enabling youth to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.

Golf Ontario announced the upcoming World Handicap System (WHS) webinar schedule. Beginning February, Golf Ontario will be offering five WHS certification sessions virtually. Instructed by the Handicap and Course Rating department, the webinar will take an in-depth look at all seven Rules of Handicapping as well as supporting appendix, that are an integral part of the game being inclusive and accessible to all golfers.

On a more positive note, Golf Ontario was pleased to unveil the 2021 Championship schedule. With the health and safety of all involved continuing to be of paramount importance as COVID-19 protocols continue to adjust, the 2021 schedule will feature 22 provincial championships hosted at member clubs across Ontario.

Uxbridge, ON – Golf Ontario is pleased to unveil the 2021 Golf Ontario championship schedule. After a very successful championship campaign in a year of uncertainty and challenges, Golf Ontario is excited to return to an expanded schedule next summer.

As with this past championship season, the health and safety of all involved will continue to be of paramount importance as COVID-19 protocols continue to adjust. “With the safety of our member clubs, players, volunteers, and staff being our top priority, we will continue to monitor the pandemic and adjust the 2021 Championship season accordingly”, explained Golf Ontario Executive Director, Mike Kelly.

The 2021 schedule will feature 22 provincial championships hosted at member clubs across Ontario. “Following a year where we had to cancel many championships due to the pandemic, we are excited to bring back most of Golf Ontario’s events for the 2021 Championship season”, said Golf Ontario Manager of Rules & Competitions, John Lawrence.

Golf Ontario will continue to make announcements in the coming months as additional dates and venues are secured. Below are the highlights on the 2021 championship schedule:

• The championship season will kick off with the annual Junior Spring Classics held over the Victoria Day weekend
• Whistle Bear Golf Club will host the Ontario Junior Boys Championship for the first time since Albin Choi won the event there in 2009
• Brockville Country Club will host its first ever Ontario Junior Girls Championship.
• The 106^th Ontario Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championship will be conducted in June at Pointe West Golf Club.
• The venue for the Ontario Men’s Amateur will be announced in January following the holiday season.
• The Ontario Disability Championship will move to July to run in conjunction with the Ontario Open.

The complete schedule including tournament formats, exemptions, and entry eligibility will be available next month with registration beginning in early February.

Uxbridge, ON – Golf Ontario is thrilled to announce the 2021 Team Ontario squad, which features many of the best young golfers in the province. Featuring eighteen members as part of the soon to be launched Junior Golf Pathway, seven members will return from the 2020 team, and will be joined by eleven fresh faces to the Team Ontario squad.

The seven returning athletes include Thomas Latter (Credit Valley G&CC), Peter Blazevic (Markland Wood GC), Ben MacLean (St. Catherine’s G&CC), Sarah Gallagher (Blue Springs GC), Ella Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC), Bo Brown (Blue Springs GC), and Alexis McMurray (Glen Abbey GC).

Joining the team on the female’s side are four strong players, who each had an excellent showing during the 2020 championship season. New faces include 2020 Super Camp champion Alessandra Nagayo (Don Valley GC), and Super Camp silver medalist Alissa Xu (Station Creek). Also joining are 2020 Ontario Junior Girls’ bronze medalists, Jillian Friyia (Highland CC) and Rozlyn Rooke (Blue Springs GC).

Fresh faces on the male’s side include seven players with achievement highlights such as, a top four finish as a Juvenile at the 2020 Ontario Junior Boys’ Championship, 2020 Ontario Juvenile Boys’ gold medalist, and Super Camp 2020 bronze medalist. These players include Ty Stansfield (The Thornhill Club), Ryan Somerville (Coppinwood & The Summit), Owen Kim (Blue Springs GC), Michael Weber (Rattlesnake Point GC), Matthew Martel (Lookout Point GC), Ellis Kinnaird (Mississippi GC), and Andreas Diogenous (Whistle Bear GC).

Team Ontario’s training is lead by Head Provincial Coach, PGA of Canada Class “A” professional Reggie Millage. With a focus on the team’s vision, mission, and values aimed at inspiring lifelong excellence, Millage will work to help team members grow as golfers while also instilling habits that will lead to success throughout life.  Additional support from the Integrated Support Team comprised of Dr. Nick Martichenko; Strength & Conditioning Coach and Dr. Charles Fitzsimmons; Sport Psychologist will help enhance the athletes’ skills through fitness, nutrition, and development of the mental side of the game.

With a heavy focus on training and athlete development, the Team Ontario program has been built to maximize the success of these athletes. Modern Golf in Toronto and Peak Performance in Vaughan will be Team Ontario’s primary indoor off season training facilities. Added to the training schedule this year, Team Ontario will be travelling to Bear Mountain in Victoria BC this December, to use Golf Canada’s National Junior training centre.  Pending COVID-19 restrictions, Team Ontario is again hoping to return to Myrtle Beach for training before the 2021 Can Am Junior Team Matches. Myrtle Beach has been a great partner of Golf Ontario and offers some amazing off season training for the team.

Congratulations to all of the 2021 Team Ontario members. Golf Ontario, along with our members, volunteers, and partners, look forward to cheering the team on throughout the 2021 competitive season.

Golf Ontario, the Provincial Sport Organization for Golf, is currently seeking interested individuals to serve on the Board of Directors for a three year term commencing April 2021.

With over 80 years of history and tradition, serving 100,000 members, Golf Ontario is one of the largest golf associations in the world.  We strive to align with all golf stakeholders through a connected golf community driving more people to play more golf, more often and most importantly while starting at a younger age. Golf Ontario is focused on leading and supporting our industry partners to the benefit of golfers across the province.

The Board is responsible for determining Golf Ontario policy; for protecting the long term growth and health of the organization; for developing, monitoring and evaluating the strategic goals; for approving the annual budget; and for authorizing and taking responsibility for the funding of the organization.

If you have a strong passion for and understanding of the sport of Golf, we would like to hear from you.  Strategic thinkers with experience particularly in: Finance and Accounting (CPA); Fundraising; Government Relations; and/or how to make golf more accessible and welcoming to diverse populations are invited to apply.

Uxbridge, ON – As the 2020 Ontario golf season starts to come to a close, and with a strong 2020 Championship season behind us, it is now time to appreciate the real MVP’s of Golf Ontario: the volunteers. Without the support and dedication of these spectacular volunteers, Golf Ontario wouldn’t be able to run such successful events or provide such great support to each participant and their families. We thank and appreciate all the hours, passion, and energy each of our volunteers contributes throughout the season. On Tuesday October 20^th, Golf Ontario hosted the annual Volunteer Appreciation Day at the beautiful Wooden Sticks Golf Course. This day of golf is always an important event in celebrating our incredible volunteers.

As COVID-19 continues to affect our lives and the way we celebrate together, Golf Ontario conducted its’ 2020 Volunteer Recognition Day in virtual fashion on Monday November 9^th.

Saying thank you just doesn’t seem to capture the depth of our appreciation for the way you share your time and talents with us. The passion and commitment that you bring to Golf Ontario is priceless, and it exponentially impacts our members and stakeholders. On behalf of the entire staff team at Golf Ontario, we are deeply grateful to you”.

President of Golf Ontario’s Board of Directors, Howard Atkinson, added “on behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the 262 active volunteers that have contributed to the success of Golf Ontario this year. We on the Board are also volunteers, so we know exactly what an extraordinary effort it has taken this year to supply Ontarians with a golf experience that they deserve, and I know it was well received this year. While every single volunteer plays a crucial role in the success of Golf Ontario’s operations, each year the organization recognizes a few shinning individuals who have gone above and beyond their volunteer commitments. This year’s very deserving 2020 award recipients are as follows:

2020 Volunteer of the Year – Lee Griffin

The Golf Ontario Volunteer of the Year Award has been designed to recognize and honor a Golf Ontario volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding performance and contributions, while preserving the integrity and traditions of the game.

This year’s deserving recipient is Lee Griffin. “Over the last 20 years, Lee Griffin, has shown her dedication to Golf Ontario. She has been an award winner multiple times in the past: 2009 Volunteer of the Year, 2011 Honorary Life Director, 2017 Distinguished Service Award. Lee assisted at multiple qualifiers and championships this season and acted as a Rules Chair for each qualifier and the Women’s Amateur. As mentioned, she has helped move along the Level Two’s, forwarding them along to us to get them the experience that they need. She ran the online seminars in the spring and looked after the exams following”.

Lee would like to “thank John, Rob, and the other members of the Golf Ontario staff, who through their hard work in the spring made it possible for us to have tournaments. I’d like to thank Gerry Bower who was my partner in crime for teaching the Level Two’s this year. We certainly didn’t know when we started in January that we would keep going until May, but for once people actually enjoyed having a webinar of the Rules of Golf. There are a number of referee’s and tournament officials who worked a lot of tournaments this year as well, and without your dedication the tournaments wouldn’t exist. I would like to personally say thank you, because your dedication to the organization makes it possible for all of us to benefit”.

Lee concluded with a quote, saying “I think Marlene Stewart Streit said it best – Golf is about the friends you meet along the way. For me, and I think for a lot of other officials, we have become friends and the social part of being a volunteer is what really keeps us going. I would like to say thank you very much to my friends, it’s been a wonderful year and I hope we have many more years together”.

Honorary Life Director – John Swift

Honorary Life Directors are recognized for their outstanding achievements through their involvement as a Committee and Board Member. “This award goes to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to Golf Ontario’s vision and mission”, explained Mike Kelly.

The 2020 recipient of the Honorary Life Director award is John Swift. “John Swift served as a member of the Board of Directors from 2008 to 2010 and was the President from 2010 to 2011. John is also a former district coordinator for Hamilton. He ran all the district tournaments and was in charge of overseeing the overall organization and operations of each tournament”.

Golf Ontario’s Executive Director Mike Kelly had some words of appreciation for John, as John was unable to join the virtual awards ceremony today. “I just want to use this opportunity to share a few words. From my early days at Golf Ontario, you were an instrumental leader. Whether at golf tournaments or around the board table, your impact was meaningful at a time when you may remember, we launched the Ontario Summer Games and were part of the Games for the first time back. As well when Golf in School’s was just taking off across Ontario. You should be very proud! It’s been a while since I’ve seen you, but I remember fondly, seeing you quite a bit at our championships. I just want to tell you that this honour is well deserved, and you’ve left a great legacy”, expressed Mike Kelly.

Dick Grimm Distinguished Award – Jim Bristow

The Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award is considered the highest honor, recognizing individual service to the game of golf in Ontario. The award is named after Richard H. Grimm, who was affectionately known as “Mr. Canadian Open” for his service to the event from 1965 to 1993. Golf Ontario’s Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual’s meritorious service as a volunteer. Recipients of this award embody the principles of integrity, dignity, and commitment, which are central to the volunteer experience and to Mr. Grimm’s persona. This honour recognizes individuals who over a significant period, have demonstrated outstanding leadership and involvement in the growth of Amateur Golf in Ontario. The recipient will also demonstrate a commitment to the vision and mission of Golf Ontario by promoting and upholding the values of the association and the game.

Receiving the Dick Grimm Distinguished Award, “Jim Bristow has demonstrated a long-term commitment to Golf Ontario, our mission, and advancing the sport. Jim Bristow from London is a past Ontario Golf Association President (OGA) in 1996, has been a volunteer with Golf Ontario since 2002, and was recognized as an Honorary Life Director in 2015. Jim retired in 2018 from actively working as a Level Four rules official, site coordinator, and senior rules official, but still on our Golf Ontario finance and audit committee”.

Board of Director member of the Finance & Audit Committee, Sheldon Chychrun added kind words as well. “Thank you for your contribution to Golf Ontario’s finance and audit committee. Jim shares his investment knowledge, which is extensive, as well as his knowledge of our organization which has helped guide our Golf Ontario investment funds. Jim has spent countless hours preparing historical information for all the different funds. He has always had this amazing ability to challenge us in an extremely respectful way, that has helped our organization continue to move forward. We really appreciate all his hard work, his attention to detail, and his contributions to Golf Ontario”.

Jim was thrilled to be recognized for this award, saying “having known Dick Grimm for over 25 years, it’s indeed an honour to win an award that bears his name. It also affords me one last trip down memory lane. I have enjoyed working with all the staff, who share a common appreciation for volunteers and their role in the organization. The financial condition of the organization is strong and in very good hands. I would be remiss if I did not offer kudos to Mike Kelly, John Lawrence, Rob Watson, the other staff, and all the volunteers who managed to have a season of championships in 2020, under the most trying conditions. In closing, I would again like to thank all the great volunteers and staff who kept me enjoying the involvement and challenges that made this recognition possible”.

The Paul “Fitz” Fitzgerald Award – Darrell Peters

Recognized for his extensive work course rating, Darrell Peters is the 2020 recipient of the Fitz Award. “Darrell Peters has helped the Hamilton team with course rating and provided his insight into best practices that works for his team. Darrell has created an automated form, which has allowed all of our teams to save time and provided a better platform of transferring data recorded on course to the course rating program. Darrell is also involved with the handicap committee at his home club, Markland Woods”.

Handicap and Course Rating Coordinator, Duncan Chau, added “I still remember the first time I met Darrell at our course rating seminar. Through these times of getting to know Darrell, either at our Handicap seminars or conversations over the phone, he has really demonstrated his passion for course rating. Thank you so much for all of your contributions and the automated form that has been helping all of our other teams throughout the year, with building ratings as well as helping shape our team by making a positive impact in Ontario”.

Darrell followed up the acceptance by saying “thank you all for the kind words and for the award. It sounded really easy when I volunteered to make this spreadsheet, but I knew I had to improve my knowledge of excel and course ratings to make this happen, but I was up for that. I went slow over the winter, sending out a couple of prototypes to various people. A number of times this winter I thought I was in way over my head, and I was afraid I was going to be the most hated course rater in Ontario if people were frustrated with something that wasn’t working. But here we are a year later, and the spreadsheet has been used by team leaders in Ontario and Manitoba. I’ve received lots of feedback from team leaders and lots of ideas for improvement, so I think it was a success. This award that I received today tells me that Golf Ontario acknowledges the success as well, so for that I’m very appreciative”.

Mike Kelly closed the 2020 Volunteer Recognition Day by saying “thank you again everyone for joining us today. We are so incredibly lucky to have such a brilliant team of volunteers and we cannot do this without your support. To all of our award winners today, Lee, John, Jim, and Darrell, congratulations to you. To all of our volunteers, thanks to each and every one of you. What you do for Golf Ontario matters deeply, and we look forward to continuing this journey in 2021 with you. Enjoy the off season, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay happy!”

Uxbridge, ON – In our final edition of the Golf Ontario Summer 2020 recap, we look back on September, the final month in our 2020 championship schedule. The month of September ushered in a variety of weather conditions, making it feel like players would be battling tough conditions for the remainder of season. Greeted by cold, wet conditions at the Ontario Senior Men’s and Women’s Championship, players then experienced a drastic change in weather at the Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, with conditions that felt like summer was making one final appearance.

This exciting final month of championships featured defending of titles, impressive battles for the lead, and amazing shots in tricky conditions.

September Championships

Taking to the course from August 31 to September 1 at Cambridge Golf Club, Golf Ontario welcomed the Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship. This championship would also see Golf Ontario crown a winner for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ and Girls’ Championship.

The weather couldn’t have been more agreeable as the players teed off for round one. On the girls’ side of the championship, an impressive round of four-under 68 gave Kelly Zhao (Station Creek GC – North) a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship. Tied for second with even par 72’s were Vanessa Borovilos (Weston G&CC) and Shauna Liu (Station Creek GC – North). Liu was the current leader for the Peewee (U13) Girls’, with Michelle Xing (National Pines GC) and Elliana Buhagair (Deer Creek GC) following with two and four-over par respectively.

Taking his place at the top of the Boys’ leaderboard after round one, with a two-under par 70 was Bantam (U15) player Jax Sisson (Ambassador GC). Sisson’s round included three birdies and only one bogey to give him a two-stroke lead heading into the final round. Close on his tail, and also sitting atop the leaderboard for the Peewee (U13) Boys’, was Jager Pain (Public Player), with a solid round that included three birdies for an even par 72.

With clouds looming over Cambridge Golf Club, many players were worried that the final round would be rained on. In celebration of Women’s Golf Day, the Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ dominated the course, as the females posted the lowest scores of the championship. Holding onto her impressive lead to take home the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Girls’ Championship title, Kelly Zhao (Station Creek GC – North) finished the tournament with an even par (140) on the championship.

Making massive moves on the course in the final round, Cale Marontate (Kingsville G&CC) secured the title for the 2020 Ontario Bantam (U15) Boys’ Championship. In an impressive turn of events, Marontate jumped twelve positions to give him the win with an overall three-over par (147).

In recognition of the Ontario Peewee (U13) Boys’ Championship, Jager Pain (Public Player) took home the gold, while Michelle Xing (National Pines GC) was awarded the gold (149) for the Ontario Peewee (U13) Girls’ Championship.

As summer slowly slipped away, players prepared to tee up for the Ontario Public Amateur Championship, presented by Baka Mobile, at Meadowbrook Golf Club from September 1 to 2. With three championship flights taking to the course, golfers in the A flight (gross) and two net flights (B and C) tackled the beautiful Meadowbrook conditions. Spectacular tree lined, lush fairways were paired with greens requiring accurate approach shots, providing a tough yet fair track for day one of the annual two-day tournament.

In the A Flight, which is a gross competition, Gavin Smith of Orangeville closed out the first 18 holes with an even par 71 to take the lead into day two. B Flight and the first net score competition, saw both Kyle Stolys of Richmond Hill and Tony Darbyson of Brooklin atop the leaderboard with a first round – three-under. Rounding out the leaderboard is the C Flight, which again is a net competition. A strong three under on his back nine has Andrew Garron of Kingston, holding a four shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round.

After a humid and breezy first round of the Public Player Championship presented by Baka, players enjoyed a mostly duller, wetter day of weather for the final round play. The overall winner and winner of the A flight (gross) competition was Aurora’s Kevin Holloway. Birdies on 11, 15 and 18 secured him the victory with an even par round of 71 and two-over overall.

The B Flight and the first net score competition finished in regulation with a two-way tie of +1 overall for the lead between Troy Darbyson and Ken Brace, both of Brooklin, requiring a three-hole playoff. Darbyson had the low round through both rounds, shooting a 68 in round one to help build his early lead and hang on to reach the playoff holes, from which he would emerge victorious.

The C flight Championship also ended in regulation with a two-way tie for the lead between Zachary Peters and Andrew Garron. After a closely contested playoff, Hamilton’s Peters emerged as the winner of the C flight.

Golf Ontario was ecstatic to announce the tee-off of the 2020 Ontario Senior Men’s and Women’s Championship, presented by Durham Artificial Grass, from September 8 to 10 at the stunning Taboo Muskoka Resort and Golf. It was a gloomy day to start round one, as players battled wet, cold conditions for majority of the day.

On the Men’s side, sharing the top of the leaderboard, was 2014 Ontario Senior Men’s Champion Larry Cooper (Mississauga) and 2019 bronze medallist Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood). Cooper had a strong start on the front going three-under par, including an eagle on the eighth hole, to finish off the round one-under par (70). In first place after round one on the Women’s leaderboard, was five-time Ontario Senior Women’s Champion, Mary Ann Hayward (St. Thomas G&CC). Playing a consistent round, Hayward was able to make a couple of birdies and an eagle on the fourteenth hole, leaving her at three-over par (74).

Fall like conditions continued into round two, as challenging conditions made an impact on players as they continued to fight the cold weather. Remaining at the top of the leaderboard on the Men’s side, Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood) had a strong round with three birdies to hold on to his lead at one-under par (141). Making a big move on that day was three-time Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club), after an impressive performance of five birdies to move him from seventh to second with a two-over par total. On the Women’s side, the leaderboard saw quite a bit of movement with the top leaders changing positions. Taking over the lead following round two, Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC) had a fantastic round of just one-over par and a couple of birdies, to give her a three-stroke lead over second (147).

Having a fantastic season after recently finishing second place in the Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Terrill Samuel (Weston G&CC) captured her second Ontario Senior Women’s Championship title. Playing her lowest round of the championship (70) on the final day, Samuel posted the low round of the day to finish six strokes ahead of the silver medalist, leaving her at four-over for the week (217). Rounding out a star studded top three were five-time champion Mary Ann Hayward, who finished at ten-over par to secure the silver medal (223), while three-time champion Judith Kyrinis (Granite GC) took home the bronze medal (225).

Securing the Ontario Senior Men’s Championship title, Dave Bunker (Cherry Hill Club) completed the final round two strokes ahead of silver medalist Ashley Chinner (Coppinwood). Sitting in second place after round two, Bunker managed to shoot a solid one-over par round that included three birdies, putting him atop the final leaderboard at three-over par (216) on the championship. Already a three-time winner of the Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships, Bunker adds another title to his belt following his first Senior Men’s Championship win.

Championship season continues with the 2020 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, presented by BioSteel, at the Loyalist Country Club from September 22 to 24. While temperatures may have been high, the opposite can be said for the scores, as players took to the course for round one and used the warm weather to their advantage. Holding the leader position after round one with an impressive score of five-under par (67), Ryan Tsang (Cedar Brae GC) shot four birdies and added an eagle on eighteen to finish off the low scoring round.

While the low scores continued into round two, high winds picked up in the early afternoon, giving the later groups more of a challenge. Maintaining his position atop the leaderboard, Ryan Tsang (Cedar Brae GC) would now hold an extraordinary lead at eleven-under par (133) after firing seven birdies, to put him a whopping six strokes ahead of second. Holding onto second with a three-way tie and two-under par for the day (139), Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club), David Lang (Donalda Club / pictured above), and Scott Rutgers (Roseland G&CC), would be battling for the silver and bronze titles.

With low winds and high competition, the final round was a nail biter as players looked to climb the board for a podium finish. Holding his own and leading the way for the entirety of the three days, Ryan Tsang (Cedar Brae GC) seized his first Golf Ontario Championship title, as the winner of the 2020 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship. In an impressive showing, Tsang was able to hold his position in the final round after firing three consecutive birdies on the final three holes. The low score of 207 put him three strokes ahead of the two-way tie (210) for the silver medal. Rounding up the silver medal was both 2019 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Charles Fitzsimmons (Thornhill Club), and David Lang from the Donalda Club.

After a very successful launch in 2019, the Ontario Disability Championship returned to the beautiful Woodington Lake Golf Club from September 28 to 29. The event was included in the list of events eligible for world ranking points and would see both Men and Women compete in both low gross and net stableford categories.

A beautiful day greeted the players for round one, as the warm weather continued into the day and winds began to pick up around noon, giving the later groups more of a challenge on the back nine. Leading the Overall Men Gross following round one, was defending champion Kurtis Barkley (Cedar Glen GC), with an even-par round after shooting an eagle on the first hole and four birdies for the day. Holding in first for the Overall Women Gross was another defending champion, Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point GL), with an 88 after round one.

Defending the Men’s 2020 Ontario Disability Championship title, for the second year in a row, was Kurtis Barkley (Cedar Glen GC) after an impressive showing of 145 over two rounds. As the wind may have been stronger in round two, Barkley’s score sure didn’t show that, as he continued to excel and finished at just one-over par on the day. Four strokes behind in second place to win silver medal, was Josh Williams (Craigowan G&CC), following a round of two birdie shots and two-over par (148). Winning the bronze medal, Gary Bos (Public Player) experienced a bit of a roller coaster in his round, after shooting a mix of birdies, bogeys, and double bogeys (157).

On the Women’s side, also taking home the 2020 Ontario Disability Championship title for a second year in a row, is Natasha Stasiuk (Heron Point Golf Links) (171). Stasiuk was much happier with her round today, after finishing the final round with an eleven-over par (83). Taking home the silver medal with 205 on the championship is Public Player Tessa Trojan.

Other Notable Events

Golf Ontario also gave out their annual Scholarship Awards in September to some lucky and deserving recipients. Providing financial assistance to deserving student golfers since 1994, the Golf Ontario Scholarship program exists with the support of our corporate partners and sponsors. This support allows Golf Ontario to award multiple scholarships each year to support student golfers as they pursue post-secondary education.

Winning of our largest scholarship this year, Aidan Hussey (Barcovan GC) was awarded the Craig Revell scholarship. This annual Scholarship in Craig’s name represents the fact that Aidan not only achieved success on the golf course, but also in all facets of his life. Hussey, a golfer from a small town in southern Ontario, will be attending McMaster University this fall to study Integrated Business and Humanities. With a passion for global leadership and humanitarian work, Hussey and a friend from high school (with the help of a teacher), created the ‘ENSS Hope Project’ while completing his grade ten year. This young, ambitious golfer hopes to play on the McMaster golf team once the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) resumes their season.

Well folks, that’s a wrap on the Golf Ontario 2020 Championship season! A big thank you to all the players, volunteers, and staff for respecting the COVID-19 protocols set in place, so that all participants could enjoy a safe season of tournament play. A final thank you to all our host courses for their amazing hospitality during these challenging times, our departments and staff for their tireless efforts, and a massive thanks to our volunteers and officials who make everything possible. We look forward to welcome you back to the golf course in 2021!
