Rank holds the lead at Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship after 36 holes, Team Ontario wins Inter-Provincial title

Written by Golf Canada
VICTORIA, B.C. – As the brisk, windy conditions set in at Victoria Golf Club, Garrett Rank fought hard to keep the heat going during the second round of the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship and hold on to his lead at Victoria Golf Club on Wednesday.
The three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion started off strong with three birdies and an impressive eagle across his first twelve holes against a single bogey. However, the strength of the wind picked up, making for difficult playing conditions on the back-nine.
“Sometimes you get the bad end of the draw and we got the bad end of the draw with nine holes of absolute survival in the wind,” said Rank. “I couldn’t really distance myself today and I guess mother nature didn’t cooperate, so it was a bit of a grind there.”
The less-than-ideal weather saw the 30-year-old make two more bogeys for a second round 68. With more wind forecasted for Thursday, the Elmira, Ont., talent will head into the third round with a three-stroke lead.
“I’m in a good condition after the first two days,” added the NHL referee. “Now everyone has to play in the same weather conditions, so it levels the playing field a little bit and I’m in a good spot.”
It was a different story for the three local golfers who round out the top-three. With the Victoria crowds cheering them on during the earlier wave, they are still within reach of winning the championship on home soil. As the familiar green of his home club lay under his feet, Victoria native Jordan Caron shot a 67 to sit in solo-second.
“I just wanted to come in with low expectations,” said the former host club Assistant Professional. “But it’s easy to get on your home golf course in a tournament like this and start thinking more about where not to hit instead of where to hit it, so I’ve been reigning myself in.”
Despite struggling with his swing, Caron registered four birdies and three bogeys enroute to a two-round score of 4 under par.
“I grinded well and kept my head and made a lot of par putts which is good and a few birdie putts here,” added Caron. “It was kind of fun to start getting to the part when I was under par again, so it’s exciting but at the same time you’re trying to treat it like a regular round of golf out here.”
Another Victoria Golf Club member, Saare Adams, started on the back-nine weighed down by four bogeys, but made three consecutive birdies after making the turn. The 34-year-old finished the round sharing a piece of third at 2 under with fellow Victorian Kevin Carrigan, who won the tournament in 2012 and 2013.
In the Mid-Master division, Todd Fanning from Winnipeg, Man., held on to first place, recovering from a shaky start that included two bogeys and two double bogeys.
“Today was a little more up and down than yesterday,” said the defending champion. “I had a lot of silly shots and a lot of good shots and turned out to be an even-par 70 which was a bit of a grind because I had to finish 3 under on my last seven.”
After recording the first ace of the tournament on the sixth hole, Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C. is in second, three shots behind Fanning at 2 over. David Greenaway of Barrie, Ont., and host club member Craig Doell of Victoria, B.C., are tied for third at 4 over par.
Team Ontario cemented their spot in the tournament’s history, defending their inter-provincial title with an impressive 10-stroke margin to win the R. Bruce Forbes Trophy for the fourth straight year. Thanks to Rank’s lead, three-time Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Brampton, Ont., and Patrick Forbes of Toronto, Team Ontario secured their 14th win in the inter-provincial division, the most wins by a team since the division was established in 1992.
Team British Columbia finished in second with a total 2-over-par 282 while Team Manitoba came in third at 9-over-par 289.
In addition to the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur title, the 2018 champion will receive an exemption into the 2019 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ont.
Rivers and Long sweep the Investors Group Ontario Bantam Championship

Fenwick, ON- Brooke Rivers of Brampton Golf Club held her lead from the first day to win the girls championship after two rounds. Alex Long of Credit Valley Golf and Country Club had a lead after the first round, but during moments of the second round found himself tied at times for first place with his competitors. In the end, he would carry his solid game through the entire day to prevail and win the boys championship.
The final round of the Investors Group Ontario Bantam (U15) Championship took place today at the beautiful Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick Ontario. While the first round of competition on Tuesday was plagued by rain, delays, and hot temperatures, the final round of the championship which took place today was a windy day, with cooler temperatures allowing some relief for the golfers.
Brooke Rivers of Brampton Golf Club (+2) 73 started out the front nine (+1) 36, with two birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey. She then finished off the course (+1) 37 with two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. She went 71, 73 for a two-day total of 144.
Nicole Gal of Oakville Golf Club was awarded a silver medal for her efforts this week, she started out the front nine at par 35 with three birdies and three bogies, she then finished the back nine (+2) 38 with one birdie and three bogeys. She went 78, 73 for a total of 151 over two days.

Brooke said a lot of focus on her game worked out for her this week, and her strategy was simple, “Just trying to focus on my game, not play too risky (of) shots. Pars are your friend. Try not to make doubles. That didn’t work out. Just try to be consistent”. She said she is happy to have won, “It’s really nice to win. I had a lot of fun playing with all the girls, and they were all supporting me, … they were all cheering for me when I made putts” – Brooke Rivers.
Alex Long of Credit Valley Golf and Country Club started out the front nine (+3) 38 today with three bogeys and went out on the back nine (-3) 33 with three birdies. He was even through the day with a 71. He went 67, 71 over two rounds for a total of 138. In second place was Justin Matthews of Oshawa Golf and Curling Club who started out the front nine today (-2) 33 with three birdies and a bogey, he then finished up the back nine at par 36 with a double bogey and an eagle. He went 72, 69 for a two day total of 141.
Long was happy to have won today, after winning the Golf Ontario PeeWee Championship earlier this season at Lakeridge Links Golf Club, winning two championships in one year is extra special. After a (+3) front nine, he wanted to post a red number on the back nine, and he did, he was (-3) on the back nine, with a great even par day 71.
“I would like to thank Golf Ontario for having another great Ontario championship. I’d like to thank Sawmill Golf Club for hosting it, the course was great. I’d like to thank my dad for taking me here, as well as my mom for supporting me, and I’d like to thank my coach for teaching me” – Alex Long
Ben MacLean of St. Catherines Golf and Country Club and Thomas Latter of Credit Valley Golf and Country Club finished T3 with a two-round total of 145 each. Ben MacLean was (+3) 38 on the front nine with a double bogey, a birdie, and two bogeys and finished the back nine (-2) 34 with two birdies for 72 today, paired with his 73 yesterday, his low scoring week secured his T3 position. Thomas Latter of Credit Valley Golf and Country Club started out the front nine (+3) 38 with four bogeys and a birdie and finished out the back nine (+1) 37. He went 70, 75 for a two day total of 145.

McLaughlin wins 2nd title of year & Cardwell prevails in marathon at Ontario Juvenile Girls & Boys Championship

Click here for Results Boys & Girls
OSHAWA, ON – Team Ontario member Hailey McLaughlin of Granite Golf Club, had a great round on the final day of the Investors Group Ontario Juvenile (U17) Championship she went 78-73-72 for a total of 223 to win. Today Hailey shot an even par 72. On the front nine, she was (+1) 37 with two bogeys and a birdie. She then headed out on the back nine (-1) 35 with one bogey and two birdies. Brooke Rivers of Brampton Golf Club was (+4) 76 today, and there was a two-part tie for third place between Jillian A Friyia of Highland Country Club and Alexis McMurray of Glen Abbey Golf Club.
McLaughlin had a great even par round today, “I was making a lot of putts on the back nine especially, which was really good … I had a bit of space on the back nine to be a bit more aggressive so I took that chance, and I took that risk, went for it, and it paid off in the end” – Hailey said. She also said that winning her second Golf Ontario Championship of the season feels even more special due to this one being her last this season, “it was a great way to cap it all off”.
The tie on the boys’ side consisted of Ethan Cardwell of Oshawa Golf and Country Club, who shot 69-76-72, for a total score of 217 and Michael Ikejiani of Barrie Country Club, who shot 74-72-71, for a total score of 217. The competition was just starting when they tied on the 18th hole after they both sunk great putts that forced a playoff. Cardwell was triumphant at his home club after 5 playoff holes where a large crowd gathered around to watch him win. He felt his knowledge of the course was a huge advantage for him in the Championship and played a few risky shots during the playoffs, but got away with it due to his knowledge of the greens. Heading into today’s round, Cardwell said that “having that lead was nice to fall back on … and I just felt confident, I knew if I played patient and slow golf I could get the job done” – Ethan said.
Ethan Cardwell thanked his competitor Michael Ikejiani for his perseverance through the 3 days of the championship and the 5 playoff holes of golf. Cardwell is extremely proud to have won at his home course with family, friends, and fellow members here to support him. “It was pretty special. I’ve never heard a roar like that in junior golf before. I got pretty excited being on the 18th green, and having hundreds of members here, family members, and players in the tournament here supporting me, it was an awesome experience” – Cardwell said. This was Cardwell’s last tournament of the season as he heads to training camp for the Saginaw Spirit in Michigan in two weeks. He is looking forward to having a successful 1st OHL season this year and said he’ll be back for more golf next golf season.
Michael Ikejiani of Barrie Country Club went home with the Silver medal after a well-played round, while Justin Matthews of Oshawa Golf and Curling club went home with bronze after 3 great days of golf.
McLaughlin and Cardwell both took the opportunity to speak once they received their trophies to thank their supporters, Oshawa Golf and Curling Club, the staff, volunteers, their peers, and a special nod to their parents, who they both thanked sincerely.
Thank you to the beautiful Oshawa Golf and Curling Club for hosting the Investors Group Ontario Juvenile (U17) Championship this week. Golf Ontario would also like to thank the amazing course volunteers, members of the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club for their support of the championship. Two Burlington Golf and Country Club members playing in the same foursome Ace the same hole!

Two Peas in a Pod
When Burlington Golf and Country Club member, Barbara Hoecht, reached the yellow tee on the third hole of Brantford Golf and Country Club she realized that she had chosen the wrong club for the shot. Her husband Ted had just made the shot from the red tee and the rugged terrain running along the left-hand size of the slope indeed had created complications. However, as it was incredibly hot and it had taken mountain-goat-like skills to get up on that mound, Barb decided that she would just need to choke down and swing easy. She sized up the large green set into hilly terrain and took her shot. It deflected off the front right of a hill and made its way all across the green directly into the cup. Barb recalls “It was as though it knew the way!”
Luann Grey, next on the tee, hit her ball, and the group blinked in disbelief as it too appeared to be travelling in the same fashion directly toward the cup. Luann recalls “When I went up to the tee I was so excited for Barb that I did not think about a hole-in-one for me. When I hit the ball, I could hear Barb and Connie shouting, “Wow, I think you hit in the exact spot off the side of the hill!” followed by an excited “It’s going to the pin!”. Next thing we knew it dropped in! It was like seeing Barb’s hole in one all over again. I could not believe it! I too have a hole in one!”
Connie Hughes, the last of the foursome to take her shot, was so elated and anxious to confirm her friends’ accomplishments that she barely remembers hitting her ball.
On the green, in the hole, were Barb’s lime ball and Luann’s orange ball, cozy as two peas in a pod. The group following watched in amazement fully realizing that they probably would never observe a repeat in their lifetime.
Connie excitedly researched the odds of this occurring. She was amazed to read on the National Hole-in-One Registry website “Two players from the same foursome acing the same hole: 17 million to 1.”https://nationalholeinoneregistry.com/facts-feats/
A rarity for sure! What a wonderful memory for dear friends… also like two peas in a pod!
